Transferring Credits to MCC
Monroe Community College, through Admissions and in consultation with Academic Services and departments, awards transfer credit in accordance with the State University of New York (SUNY) transfer credit policies. Transfer credit is defined as college credits from other sources such as another post-secondary institution, Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and college credits earned in high school (e.g., dual enrollment). Students are notified of their transfer credit evaluation via email. Credits are displayed on the student’s transcript and in Degree Works.
MCC will review and evaluate the following transfer credit:
- Credits from Post-Secondary Institutions: Credit is granted for courses completed at another post-secondary institution which is recognized by an accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or Council of Higher Education Accreditation, (e.g., Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, American Council on Education, etc.). All other credits from post-secondary institutions that are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved regional accrediting association will be accepted if they apply to the established curricula of MCC.
Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB): The College recognizes the Advanced Placement Program offered through the College Board. International Baccalaureate scores are also eligible for transfer credit. Students must submit official examination score reports to the Admissions Office. Specific scores and minimum scores required follow the College Board recommendations and SUNY Policy as detailed on our website:
Transfer Credit Awarded by an institution outside the United States: All credits earned outside the United States must be evaluated by an approved third-party credential evaluation service. Students are responsible for having their credits evaluated. MCC will award credit from evaluations from the World Educational Services (WES), Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE) Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE), or any other NACES-approved agency

Evaluation of Transfer Credit
Transfer credits are evaluated once a student has been accepted to MCC and official transcripts are received. Students will receive a transfer credit evaluation by email.
- Acceptance or denial of transfer credit is not determined exclusively on the basis of the mode of delivery. MCC will consider course equivalencies by reviewing if expected learning outcomes are substantially equivalent to MCC’s curricula and standards.
- All courses with grades of C or higher may be considered for transfer credit.
- Students transferring from another SUNY institution will receive credit for SUNY General Education areas or competencies with a grade of D- or higher. While these credits will transfer to MCC, they may only satisfy program-specific requirements or prerequisites if they meet that program's minimum grade standard (e.g., grade of C or higher).
- To meet residency requirements for graduation, students must complete at least 24 credits for Associate degree programs or 50% of credits for Certificates and Microcredentials directly at MCC. Transfer credit does not apply toward these totals. Please refer to specific program requirements, as some departments may require additional residency hours.
- Course credit for competitive admissions programs (e.g., Nursing) may have an expiration date for the grade to be considered when the applicant is accepted for admission.
- Transfer credit will not be removed from a student’s record.
- Courses bearing less credit at a previous institution than the equivalent course at MCC will only be awarded the number of credits earned at the previous institution.
- One quarter hours of credit will be transferred as two-thirds of one semester hour (e.g., 9 quarter hours equals 6 semester hours).
- Credits accepted by MCC may not be transferable to other institutions; students should meet with a representative of the transfer institution regarding the status of these credits.

Appeal Process
- Students who do not agree with the college’s decision on the granting of credit earned at a prior SUNY institution have the right to submit an appeal to the college’s Admissions Office.
- Students may submit their appeal request to Admissions/Transfer Credit by sending an email to Transfer Credit (transfercredit@monroecc.edu).
- Students requesting an appeal should provide reasonable material to support their case, such as the course syllabus with course learning outcomes, books used in the class, and chapters covered in the course from the year the course was taken.
- Admissions will forward the appeal to the Department Chair of the corresponding area and will respond to the student within 15 business days.
- If the Department Chair supports the appeal:
- The department returns the appeal material to the Admissions Office with the request that the student be given transfer equivalency credit as approved. The student’s transfer credit will be adjusted to reflect the new equivalency. The student will be informed, and, if the chairperson has ruled that the equivalency applies to all students, the transfer equivalency tables will be changed to reflect the new course equivalency.
- If the Department Chair rejects the appeal:
- The Admission Office will notify the student regarding the department chair's decision and the student will be informed of their right of appeal to SUNY System Administration.
- Students may submit their appeal to the SUNY System Provost by sending an email to SUNY Transfer Credit (transfercredit@sysadm.suny.edu).
